Storebrand's IT equipment helps Eritrea

Storebrand has since 2006 donated used computer equipment to the organisation FairRecycling. The equipment has gone to projects aimed at enhancing the IT development in Eritrea.

Some background on the project

In 2003 FAIR started a project in Eritrea and 1470 computers have been distributed to more than 50 schools, provided IT-training to more than 500 teachers thus ensuring that IT is part of the curriculum and providing direct access to new information to more than 40.000 pupils. This information can change their lives. FAIR employed three Eritrean citizens fulltime to ensure that the project was completed.

The project was completed in cooperation with the Ministry of Education in Eritrea. This project alone has covered the need for computer access within the public primary and secondary schools in the Massawa region, as well as for significant parts of the schools in the country's other provinces. Through the university in Asmara and with counselling from FAIR, Eritrea has developed its own national operating system. In public surveys the project was recognised at an early stage as an important contributor to the IT development in Eritrea. FAIR's system for redistributing outdated electronics has been established at two locations in Eritrea since 2005.

Everything helps

Storebrand was one of the first companies to use FairRecycling's arrangement of donating its used computer equipment for schools in developing countries. In the Third World a used Norwegian PC is comparable to a new one. Storebrand's goal is that all used electronics is recycled or reused. We wish to use the best recycling systems available on the market, and chose in 2006 to get certified through FairRecycling. All outdated electronics equipment is now handed over to the organisation for reuse in schools in developing countries. Equipment that cannot be reused is recycled in Norway. Employees can also donate their private IT equipment through this arrangement and we have among other things organised a four-day campaign where we placed PC containers at the headquarters entrance for donations.
